Day 1-4

Luang Prabang

Kuang Si Waterfalls near Luang Prabang
Highlights:

Hear tales of Luang Prabang’s illustrious past on a guided cycle tour

Play a part in the spiritual ritual of morning alms giving

Beat the crowds with an early morning visit to the emerald cascades of Kuang Si Waterfall

Luang Prabang is simply stunning. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, packed with temples, villas and monasteries, encircled by the river and jungle-clad mountains. Three days will fly by in a riot of colour and culture. First, hop on a bicycle for a religious architecture tour and stop at the excellent Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre to learn about Lao textiles, crafts and music. Explore Kuang Si Waterfall, a buffalo dairy farm, and meet retired elephants at an ethical sanctuary. In the early morning, take part in the ritual of alms giving to long lines of orange-robed monks, while at day end, cruise down the Mekong River to watch the sun set.

Day 5-6

Vientiane

Buddha statues in temple in Vientiane
Highlights:

Explore Vientiane’s historic temples and Buddhist monuments

Discover the shocking impact of UXOs at the COPE centre

Learn how to BBQ Laos style with a sindat dinner

If Luang Prabang is an open-air museum, the capital Vientiane is a real working city replete with mopeds, markets and offices. There are pockets of history, and an insightful local guide will show you Patuxai Monument, a homage to the Arc de Triomphe, and royal temples housing thousands of Buddha statues. The place that really sticks in our memory is the moving COPE exhibition centre which supports the victims of unexploded ordnance, a result of the heavy bombing Laos suffered during the Vietnam War. You'll also sit down to a traditional sindat BBQ dinner as part of an experience exploring the city after dark.

Day 7

Kong Lor

Hin Boun landscape
Highlights:

Begin your road trip through the fertile mountains of southern Laos

Visit a Hmong community market in Ban Ton Na Mae village

If you’ve got a head for heights, cross the Phou Pha Marn net bridge (there is a fee)

From Vientiane onwards you’ll take the slow road, following the course of the Mekong River. The car journeys are an integral part of the experience, passing temples wrapped in bunting, roadside stalls stacked with dried fish, and dramatic karst mountains. Today’s transfer takes four and a half hours, but your guide will break this up with a stop at Prabaht Ponsan, a 15th century stupa where it’s said the Buddha left his footprint as he crossed the Mekong. You’ll also visit a Hmong ethnic minority market, and Phou Pha Marn for a vertigo-inducing look into a spectacular limestone gorge. Tonight’s accommodation is a rustic set of glamping pods.

Transport

Day 7:
Car transfer from Vientiane to Kong Lor (4.5 hours)

Day 8

Thakhek

Sunset over the Mekong
Highlights:

Journey by boat through the tunnels of Kong Lor Cave

Distinguish your stalagmites from your stalactites in a 100m high cavern

Wander the riverfront of Thakek town as the sun sets over the Mekong

The landscape between Kong Lor and Thakhek is littered with jagged limestone mountains rising vertically from the plains like giant teeth. At the base of the karsts, lakes and lagoons have eroded caves in the rock face. The most spectacular of these is Kong Lor Cave. Picture travelling through the darkness by boat into a 100m high cavern with a gallery of stalagmites. Explore the rock formations on foot, then return to the boat and carry on down a 7km river tunnel, all the way through to the other side of the mountain. Back in the sunlight, picnic in a remote village in the tobacco fields. Your journey continues on to Thakek in time for sunset over the Mekong.

Transport

Day 8:
Car transfer from Kong Lor to Thakhek via Kong Lor Cave (6 hours)

Day 9-12

Champasak

Man pulling a long-tail boat ashore on a waterway in Laos, with mountains and clouds in the background.
Highlights:

Take a guided walk through the beautiful architecture of Savannakhet’s French Quarter

Scale ancient Wat Phou temple for magnificent views towards Thailand

At the foot of Laos, discover the 4,000 Islands by boat and mountain bike

Heading further south will take you through Savannakhet; once an important trading post between Thailand and Vietnam, and is now the best-preserved town in southern Laos, steeped in languid charm. Settle in for three nights at a boutique riverside resort in Champasak. Start your morning by climbing the steep steps of Wat Phou, atmospheric temple ruins that predate Angkor in Cambodia, in time for catching the sunrise. You'll also discover Don Khong, the largest of the 4,000 Islands where the river splits into hundreds of tributaries. Explore colourful fishing villages by mountain bike, an adventurous end to your trip to Laos.

Is this trip for you?

What's great

  • While all visitors to Laos explore Luang Prabang, we’ve created this trip to show you the peaceful villages, waterfalls, caves and islands of southern Laos where few tourists venture
  • There’s more to Laos than monks (although you’ll meet them too). We’ll introduce you to farmers, fishermen, elephant handlers, coffee growers, stone carvers and more besides
  • If you’d like to spend more time on the river, we can tailor your trip to start with a cruise down the Mekong River from the Thai border into Luang Prabang

Things to consider

  • In several rural destinations the accommodation is basic, but this is all part of the simple charm of Laos countryside
  • Some roads are bendy and bumpy - not for the faint of heart. It’s part and parcel of getting off the beaten track, and you’ll be rewarded with unspoiled Mekong views and dramatic karst mountains
  • You’ll need a good level of fitness to handle the more active experiences. Sound too energetic? We can swap these out for something more leisurely
