Hong Kong Heritage

Trip code
HHK001

Defiantly unique, Hong Kong combines Chinese roots, British colonial heritage, and an international outlook — resulting in a culture like no other.

This itinerary follows the tangled threads of Hong Kong’s history into old Chinese herb shops and dried seafood markets, into Tang-style landscaped gardens and Buddhist nunneries, and to peaceful islands where stilt villages and fishermens’ temples seem unaware of the big city just a stone’s throw away.

Transport in detail

Besides two included airport transfers by private car, you’ll be getting around independently using Hong Kong’s excellent public transport system.

What's great

This itinerary is designed to take you beneath the surface of modern Hong Kong and into its rich history

Two full days of private guiding mean you can travel at your own pace and tailor the experience to your interests

Things to consider

It’s an action-packed trip, so you won’t have much time for independent exploration and may miss some more “classic” experiences

Private guiding in Hong Kong is pricey, so consider including more independent exploration if you’re looking to save money

The experience

We built this itinerary around history and heritage, but we can design bespoke trips based on any theme. Just let us know what your interests are and we’ll get started.

Day 1-2

Hong Kong Island/Kowloon

Salt-baked quail’s eggs, soy-braised cuttlefish and typhoon shelter crab: this morning is all about getting to know Hong Kong’s culinary heritage. Starting with its old-fashioned seafood markets and ginseng shops in Kowloon — including a stop at one of its oldest temples — then hop across the water in search of eggettes, stinky tofu and siu mai fish parcels on Hong Kong Island. In the afternoon, head into the suburbs to admire the Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden, both exquisitely designed in the Tang dynasty style against the surreal backdrop of the city skyline. Finish the day back among the fish, flower and bird markets of Mong Kok, under the blinking lights of neon signs.

Day 3-4

Lantau Island

It’s time to slow the pace with a day on Lantau: Hong Kong’s biggest island. This is where Hongkongers come to escape the breakneck pace of city living, and it’s so green and tranquil that it can feel almost like a different country entirely. Make the most of the laid-back atmosphere as you explore the grand halls, pagodas, courtyards and gardens of Po Lin Monastery, then climb the steps to Tian Tan — the largest seated bronze buddha in the world. The cable car back to the mainland offers stunning panoramic views over sea and city, and you should have no problem locating the perfect sky bar in which to toast your last night as you arrive back in Kowloon.
