Ahangama

A laid-back stretch of beach with barefoot backpacker energy.

Once a sleepy fishing village, Ahangama is quickly becoming one of the hottest spots on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Fortunately, most of the development so far has been in keeping with its bohemian, Bali-esque style. On one side of a busy stretch of road, there are the sandy beaches boasting great surf breaks, and on the other, quiet side streets run through the palm-studded forest, lined with little homes and guesthouses.

Salty surfers, backpackers and families meander between the many cafés and boutique shops that have popped up, each a reprieve from the bustle of the main strip. At the heart of town, Ahangama Beach is small and busy, but packed with some of the best beachfront restaurants and bars, so well worth the buzz. If you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, Kabalana Beach just down the road has more space to stretch out, with scattered sun loungers to rent and plenty of surf schools to make the most of the waves. A day trip to Galle is just a 40-minute drive away, or you can hop to other popular beach towns like Weligama by 20-minute tuk-tuk or taxi ride. There’s also a Secret Beach, for those looking to hide away, although like the rest of Ahangama, it may not stay a secret for long.
