Holidays to Sri LankaSri Lanka: the land of beaches, leopards, rock fortresses and tea-covered hills. That’s enough to draw you in, but there’s far more to this teardrop-shaped island than its headline sights.Things run slowly here. It’s an island nation on island time, after all. So, we recommend making time for the moments in between.Spotting a chameleon chilling on a rock, just beside a waterfall along the Pekoe Trail. Watching the morning mist burn off the Ella tea fields, between sips of Ceylon tea. Finding your favourite kottu street seller, whose banging and clashing chopping technique you love the most. The well-known places have stories beyond the obvious, too. Explore Sigiriya with a guide who can bring its legends and ancient irrigation systems to life. Walk the 400-year-old Galle Fort with a local. Follow a mountain path to a monastery where monks work on their scriptures. The beauty of a Sri Lankan cultural adventure is that you can mix and match safaris with hill country, sightseeing with beach time. No two trips need to look the same. What we can guarantee, however, is a warm welcome, wildlife in the most unexpected places, and excellent dal for breakfast (lunch and dinner).Read morePlan my trip Overview Itineraries Experiences Places to visit Best time to visit Accommodation ItinerariesMore itinerariesPlan my trip Sri Lanka Fully customisable Best of Sri LankaThis two-week loop across Sri Lanka wraps the island’s quintessential experiences into one relaxed trip. Top destinations in Sri LankaSri Lanka is made for mixing things up. High-energy city markets and street food stalls sit alongside mosques and Hindu shrines. Ancient temples and ruined cities trace the rise and fall of Sri Lanka’s kingdoms, and national parks offer close encounters with elephants, deer and, with luck, leopards. Walking trails wind through villages and tea country, and boat trips head out in search of dolphins and whales. And you’re spoilt for choice with beaches. Sri Lanka YalaBrave the crowds for a leopard sighting in Sri Lanka’s most well-known safari park. Sri Lanka KandyThe cultural capital of Sri Lanka and the gateway to the tea country’s rolling emerald hills. Sri Lanka is life in soft focus. Sri Lankans are warm and friendly, and the pace is slow – everything runs on 'island time'.While things do speed up in the bigger cities it’s that balance that keeps things interesting. And you don’t have to travel far to see, feel and experience it all.My advice is: set up a route that makes you really excited to go, tick off your must-experiences, but then, leave more space for surprises. A local festival procession streaming past as you eat lunch. Spotting barking deer along the Pekoe Trail. It’s those moments in between that end up staying with you (and likely, booking your return flight soon).” Planning your holiday to Sri Lanka The best time to visit Sri Lanka You can visit Sri Lanka at any time of year, but your biggest consideration is probably monsoons. There are two distinct monsoon seasons. The southwest monsoon typically affects the south and west coasts from May to September, while the northeast monsoon affects the north and east from October to January. The good news is that it's easy to tailor your itinerary to make the most of the sunshine, whichever month you travel. As a tropical island, weather can be unpredictable, but showers are often short and followed by clear skies. February is generally considered the best month to visit Sri Lanka with favourable weather across much of the island, although this can be reflected in more people visiting, higher prices and limited availability. We go into more detail in our month-by-month guide here. Top things to do in Sri Lanka Despite its relatively small size, Sri Lanka packs an incredible amount into one island. You can find a bit of everything here (except perhaps winter sports!). The classic highlights include:Sightseeing - The Cultural Triangle: Clustered in the North Central Province are some of the country's most impressive UNESCO World Heritage sites, many more than 2,000 years old. Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress or Pidurangala Rock. Explore the remains of ancient Buddhist civilisations Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa and visit Mihintale, regarded as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.Tea country - Visit a tea estate, try your hand at plucking tea leaves and sip a cup for yourself – with some of the island’s best natural scenery around you.Trekking - If you love to trek, explore a section of the 22-stage Pekoe Trail, winding through plantations, rural villages and tea estates.Safari - There are 26 national parks in Sri Lanka. If spotting a leopard is high on your wish list we suggest Wilpattu or Yala (but the latter can become crowded during peak travel periods). Kumana National Park is Yala's quieter neighbour or there’s Gal Oya, which combines excellent wildlife viewing with boat safaris and outstanding birdwatching – and elephants are often seen along the water's edge.Beach time - Sri Lanka has more than 1,300km of coastline, so a beach is never far away. Some are broad and busy, with surf schools, beach bars and plenty going on. Others are quieter – small coves, palm-backed bays and long stretches of sand. There’s whale-watching from Mirissa, surfing in Weligama, or simply relaxing under swaying palms on the sandy shores of Bentota or Tangalle.Explore Galle - Head to the southwest coast to the port city of Galle: a UNESCO World Heritage site, where colonial architecture, boutique cafés and artisan shops sit within centuries-old fortifications. Sri Lankan food Food is one of the best things about travelling to Sri Lanka – or so we think.Rice and curry is the main event, and you’re unlikely to get quite the same combination twice. There’s plenty beyond curry, too. Egg hoppers are crisp, bowl-shaped pancakes with an egg cooked in the middle, often eaten for breakfast. String hoppers are something altogether different: nests of rice flour noodles made for soaking up curry. Then there’s kottu, a street food staple of chopped roti stir-fried with vegetables, meat or sometimes cheese. For snacks, look out for “short eats” such as mutton rolls, fish cutlets and egg rotis. Sweet tooth? Try watalappam, a coconut custard pudding, or curd with treacle. Fresh mangoes, papayas, rambutans, bananas and jackfruit are everywhere too.Vegetarians and vegans are particularly well catered for, with plenty of vegetable dishes and coconut milk-based curries. Culture Sri Lanka’s culture has been shaped by ancient traditions, deep-rooted faiths and centuries of foreign rule. Buddhism remains central to daily life, reflected in the island’s temples, festivals and sacred sites, while Hinduism, Christianity and Islam also form an important part of its identity.Portuguese, Dutch and British influence can still be seen in everything from colonial-era architecture and local food to language and family names. The result is a culture that is distinctly Sri Lankan. Our local Insider guides add context to historic sites, architecture and food, helping you see how the island’s past continues to shape life today. Frequently asked questions Is it safe to visit Sri Lanka? Yes. While the country has experienced civil war in previous decades, it has since recovered and warmly welcomes travellers. Tourism is appreciated as an important part of the economy, and locals are widely known for their friendly nature and genuine hospitality. With a slower pace than neighbouring India, Sri Lanka is a bit more relaxed. And, you'll have 24/7 support at the end of a phone call, email or WhatsApp message, so you will be well looked after around the clock by our team. What's the best way to travel around Sri Lanka? As a relatively small island, Sri Lanka is easy to explore without the need for internal flights or exhausting, long travel days. The most comfortable way to get around is by private car with your own driver-guide, but some journeys are really part of the fun in themselves. Hop into a tuk-tuk to whizz through Colombo, or take one of Sri Lanka’s trains through the tea plantations. You’ll probably spend most of your time looking out the window. Our travel consultants will help you design the perfect route and ensure you get from place to place without issue. What currency do they use in Sri Lanka? The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) is the local currency. While some hotels and tourism providers may display prices in US dollars, you'll typically pay in rupees during your trip. As Sri Lanka operates a closed currency, it's difficult to obtain rupees before you travel, but cash can be easily withdrawn from banks and ATMs once you arrive. Is it better to pay with cash or card? Card payments are widely accepted in Sri Lanka, but it is always worth having some smaller denominations of cash to hand for tipping and smaller purchases in local shops or markets. Do I need a visa to travel to Sri Lanka? You will need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) to enter Sri Lanka, which is currently free of charge for 40 nationalities. While this covers many nationalities, it doesn’t cover all (Irish passports, for example, currently have to pay), although this may change in the future. It’s recommended that you get this online ahead of arrival on the official government website, and we advise doing this 1-2 weeks before you travel. It’s valid for up to 30 days from the day of arrival. Are vaccinations / health precautions needed? There are no compulsory vaccinations for Sri Lanka, although tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis vaccinations are recommended but please consult a doctor for the most up to date advice. If you're travelling from a country where yellow fever is present, you'll need to show proof of vaccination on arrival. Sri Lanka is malaria-free, but dengue fever is present, so it's best to use a strong insect repellent and cover up at dawn and dusk. Tap water is generally safe for washing and brushing your teeth, but bottled or boiled water is recommended for drinking. How long should a trip to Sri Lanka be? We recommend spending around two weeks in Sri Lanka to experience the country's highlights and the moments in between at a comfortable pace. If you have time to stay longer, we always encourage you to do so! You'll be able to delve deeper, visit more remote regions or simply enjoy the island without rushing through. Plus, that’s plenty more opportunities for coconuts and curry. Why book with InsideAsia? Travel’s friendliest expertsWe promise we’ll care about your trip as much as you do.
