Junk boat with red flags crossing Hong Kong harbour

It's time to turn your ideas into a tailor-made trip to Hong Kong

A crossroad between Chinese culture and British colonialism; between tradition and modernity; between democracy and authoritarianism: Hong Kong is both deeply connected to China and proudly and resolutely independent of it.

Kowloon and Hong Kong Island stare each other down across Victoria Harbour, the former providing traditional Chinese heritage, market culture and a certain amount of grit; the latter offering the densest area of skyscrapers in the world, bristling up the side of a mountainside traversed by outdoor escalators and funicular trams.

But the city itself is just the half of it. In fact — much less than half. Of Hong Kong’s 1,108 sq km, over 70% is dominated by rolling hills, craggy mountains, nature reserves, country parks, rural islands and cave-riddled coastal beaches.

Hong Kong’s tiny size means everything is at your fingertips, and yet its peculiar geography means that you can feel as though you’ve ventured deep in the wilderness in just half an hour or less. Superb street food (on a par with Singapore’s, though not as fêted), a rich maritime history, and a truly iconic skyline combine — along with a cornucopia of other attractions — to make Hong Kong a place unlike any other.
