Day 1-2

Mumbai

Mumbai skyline
Highlights:

Tour Mumbai at dawn, watching fishermen haul in their catch and newspaper vendors and flower sellers fan out across the city

Explore the city’s colonial landmarks, including the Gateway of India and a UNESCO World Heritage railway station

Take some time to acclimatize at your hotel – lounging by the pool, enjoying a cup of chai in the gardens, or indulging at the in-house spa.

Mumbai: on the surface, nowhere could be more strikingly different from the rest of your trip than this mile-a-minute megacity. For us, the contrast is delicious – from the fishing docks at dawn to massive open-air laundries and old textile mills. Watching life go by, waiting to see what unexpected encounters change the course of your day is the best way to go beyond Mumbai’s landmarks.

Of course, Mumbai is a little bigger and more crowded than a national park, but with one of our expert local guides to show you the ropes and demystify the culture, it’s every bit as mesmerizing.

Transport

Day 1:
Car transfer from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to your accommodation in Mumbai (45 min)

Day 3-5

Bandhavgarh

Bandhavgarh National Park tigers
Highlights:

Go on three safaris into Bandhavgarh, on the watch for tigers, jackals, hyenas, antelope, langurs, wild elephants and more

Enjoy curated experiences at your safari lodge

Soak up the atmosphere of the forests of Bandhavgarh, the only national park with its own medieval fort.

Today, begin your wildlife immersion as you make the journey to Bandhavgarh: India’s premier destination for tiger-watching. In no other park are sightings more common, but tigers are far from the only attraction. Here, as throughout your trip, it’s about the whole wildlife experience – and that begins at your lodge. In between safaris, there’s a whole raft of extra activities to choose from. Head out on guided nature walks to appreciate the smaller wonders of the jungle (animal tracks, medicinal plants, butterflies), opt for a cooking class with the lodge’s chef, go birdwatching at dusk with an in-house naturalist, or take a guided visit to a local tribal village.

Transport

Day 3:
Car transfer from your accommodation in Mumbai to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (45 min).
Domestic flight from Mumbai to Jabalpur (1h 40).
Car transfer from Jabalpur Airport to your accommodation in Bandhavgarh National Park (4h)

Day 6-8

Kanha

Open top jeeps in Kanha national park
Highlights:

Go on four safaris at different times of day (and night!), keeping your eyes peeled for tigers, leopards, and Kanha’s famous barasingha deer

Sit back, rest and take in the classic character of your safari lodge

Fill your time between safaris with nature walks and excursions to local tribal villages under the guidance of your hosts.

Far larger and less visited than Bandhavgarh, Kanha provides a new cast of characters and an altogether quieter, more secluded experience. The setting of your lodge here is straight out of an Indian fairytale: right on the River Banjar, with lantern-strung verandas from which you can watch sambar deer drinking or birds skimming on the water. Quiet luxury and a connection to nature is the ethos here, with plenty of time in between safaris to enjoy your surroundings, practice yoga, or meet the indigenous Baiga and Gond people who still live on the fringes of Kanha. Jeep safaris in the early morning, afternoon, and evening ensure your best chances of seeing the whole range of local wildlife.

Transport

Day 6:
Car transfer from Bandhavgarh National Park to Kanha National Park (5h)

Day 9-10

Pench

Tiger in Pench
Highlights:

Experience the landscape that inspired Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book

Go on morning and evening safaris to spot tigers, leopards, wild dogs, jackals, herds of spotted deer, and over 250 species of bird

Enjoy a full programme of activities at your lodge, including horse riding and cooking classes.

Completing your triumvirate of national parks is Pench. Primarily teak forest, with a great lake at its heart, it’s a totally different kind of landscape from sal-dense Bandhavgarh or Kanha. As in the other parks, however, your lodge is absolutely at the heart of the experience, providing a menu of extracurricular activities to fill your time between safaris. As well as nature walks and birdwatching, that means horse riding or cycling through the lodge’s 38-acre ecological park, exploring the lodge’s organic farm and joining in a cooking session, or gathering around a campfire under a blanket of stars for an evening of storytelling. Jeep safaris into the park are just the icing on the cake.

Day 11-12

Busy colourful street in India
Highlights:

Enjoy a final morning amid the glorious surroundings of your safari lodge in Pench

Rest and recharge in luxury at one of Delhi’s best Aerocity hotels.

After a final morning to relax at your safari lodge, it’s onwards to Delhi for one night before your flight home. You’ll be arriving fairly late in the day, but your accommodation by the airport is luxurious, with all the facilities you need to unwind after a long afternoon traveling.

Many national parks in India close from July to mid-October, so this trip cannot be taken during some months of the year. Be sure to plan for the weather. From November to February, morning safaris can be cold enough for hats and gloves. From March to June, however, daytime temperatures are extremely hot.
