Day 1-3

Amritsar

Amritsar golden temple
Highlights:

Witness the evening ceremony at the Golden Temple, Sikhism’s holiest pilgrimage site

Stay at a 200-year-old, family-run heritage hotel

Add on an optional afternoon in the Punjabi countryside, visiting farms and villages, eating a meal in a traditional mud house, and trying your hand at local dance or martial arts.

While most people begin their Indian experience in cacophonous Delhi or Mumbai, Amritsar offers a much gentler, more manageable introduction. This is partly due to its smaller size – its Old Town is easily explored on foot – and partly due to the characteristically welcoming attitude of the Amritsaris, who are always ready with a smile and a chai. Kick off your exploration in the spiritual atmosphere of the Golden Temple on your first night, then head out with one of our expert local guides to discover the city, from a Jain market in an old fortress to a sobering memorial to colonial brutality at Jallianwala Bagh.

Transport

Day 1:
Car transfer from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport to your accommodation in Amritsar (20 min)

Day 4-5

Dharamshala

Tibetan Opera
Highlights:

Stop off at the Norbulingka Institute to see working studios dedicated to Tibetan thangka painting, wood carving and textiles

Visit Namgyal Monastery, where the Dalai Lama has had his base since 1959

Choose from a range of additional experiences: a dialogue with a Tibetan monk or momo-making at your hotel

Stay at a heritage property spread over ten acres of tea gardens, backed by views of the Dhauladhar Mountains

It’s a long and winding drive today, taking you through a dramatic transformation from the Indo-Gangetic plains into the foothills of the Himalayas. As the landscape transforms, so does the culture: from Sikh-Hindu Amritsar to the majority Buddhist regions of the far north. Once a colonial outpost, Dharamshala is now best-known as the home of the Dalai Lama’s government-in-exile at McLeod Ganj - but a day’s exploration with one of our local guides will reveal much more to this haven in the Himalayas. Stop in at the world’s most beautiful cricket stadium, wander to tea gardens and waterfalls, and browse markets stocked with Tibetan crafts and prayer flags. Don’t forget to try the momos.

Transport

Day 4:
Car transfer from Amritsar to Dharamshala (5h)

Day 6

Pragpur

Walking around Pragpur and Garli Village
Highlights:

Hear stories from Pragpur’s past, dating back to its founding in commemoration of the Rajput princess Prag Dei

Explore the village with a local guide who’ll show you to the most beautiful havelis, gardens and ornamental water tanks

Enjoy a morning of guided meditation and yoga at the Judge’s Court before your onward journey.

Just a couple of hours of south brings a totally different cultural flavor in Pragpur, the first destination in India to be designated a ‘Heritage Village’ in 1997. Founded around 300 years ago, the village’s cobbled streets, mud-and-slate houses and European-style mansions create a picture-perfect backdrop for an afternoon exploring its time-warp alleys crammed with silversmiths, basket-makers, weavers and tailors. Your home for the night is the Judge’s Court, a converted ‘country manor’ owned by the local Sood family, and surrounded by orchards filled with mango, litchi, camphor and cardamom trees.

Transport

Day 6:
Car transfer from Dharamshala to Pragpur (2h)

Day 7-9

Shimla

Walk in Shimla
Highlights:

See some of northern India’s most beautiful mountain landscapes on the drive from Pragpur to Shimla

Spend a day with a local guide, getting to know the stories of old Shimla

Stay at the Oberoi, which has hosted guests in five-star luxury since the days of the British Raj.

Heading further southwards still brings you from the snowcapped Dhauladhars to the lush, green slopes of Shimla: cloaked in forests of pine, deodar, oak and rhododendron. This former British summer capital sprawls along a ridgeline linking seven hills, commanding epic views from its mock Tudor mansions and neo-Gothic municipal buildings. Get to know the city’s unique history and cultural mix on a heritage walking tour, taking in British colonial life at the Shimla Club and Gaiety Theater, then the indigenous cultures of Himachal Pradesh at the State Museum. If you’re keen to see more, add in the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ trail through cedar woods to tucked-away temples and colonial country piles.

Transport

Day 7:
Car transfer from Pragpur to Shimla (5h 30)

Day 10

Chandigarh

Chandigarh Rock Garden
Highlights:

Wind through pine-clad hills, across stone bridges and through colonial-era stations on the Himalayan Queen Railway

Take a guided tour of Chandigarh, contrasting its Brutalist civic buildings with its playful and surrealistic ‘Rock Garden’

Learn about the philosophy behind the design of Chandigarh, a post-Independence city built to represent India’s freedom from the past.

Continue south today with a scenic train journey from Shimla to Kandaghat, a UNESCO World Heritage experience on the old Himalayan Queen Railway. From Kandaghat it’s on by car to Chandigarh, India’s first planned city, where sharp-edged, Le Corbusier-designed architecture shares top billing with the exuberant, psychedelic ‘Rock Garden’, built in secret over decades by a former road worker. Chandigarh is a strikingly different experience from any other city in India, providing a fascinating contrast to your final couple of days in Delhi.

Transport

Day 10:
Short car transfer from your accommodation in Shimla to Shimla Railway Station (2 min).
Guided train journey from Shimla to Kandaghat (1h 50).
Car transfer from Kandaghat to Chandigarh (2h 30)

Day 11-13

Delhi

Busy colourful street in India
Highlights:

Join one of Delhi’s most charismatic local guides for an introduction to the highlights of Old Delhi

Use your free time to explore the old British buildings of New Delhi, or relax in comfort at your colonial-era hotel

See the World Heritage Site of Humayun’s Tomb, commissioned by the Mughal Emperor’s wife in the 16th century.

Finally, a domestic flight brings you to Delhi, the final stop on your tour of the north. Here, you’ll swap clear mountain air for the humidity and non-stop clamor of the country’s capital, where Mughal monuments share space with tangled bazaars and up-and-coming, hipster enclaves. Get your bearings with a rickshaw tour of the Old City, rattling along past haveli mansions, mosques and markets, before concluding in the serenity of Humayun’s Tomb: World Heritage precursor to the Taj Mahal. If you’re keen to see a bit of modern culture, too, we’ll organize a walking tour of Hauz Khas – beloved by the city’s cool crowd for its boutiques, art galleries and contemporary design studios.

Transport

Day 11:
Car transfer to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport (40 min).
Domestic flight from Chandigarh to Delhi (1h).
Car transfer from Indira Gandhi International Airport to your accommodation in Delhi (25 min)

Day 13:
Car transfer from your accommodation in Delhi to Indira Gandhi International Airport (25 min)
