Just 50 kilometres long and 20 wide, Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s desert-island jewel. Though far less well-known than Thailand’s famed Koh Samui or Koh Phi Phi, it’s got all the charms to rival them – and more, since it’s seen a fraction of the development. Though things are sure to change in the coming years, for now Phu Quoc remains a little-known oasis with a laid-back colonial town centre, glorious sandy beaches, and a thickly forested interior ripe for exploration. What’s not to love?

Though most people come to Phu Quoc for the beach, there are plenty more reasons to stay. Here are our favourite things to do with a few days on the island, but be careful – you might never want to leave!

1. Go diving

From October to April, Phu Quoc is a paradise for divers of all stripes. Most of the dive sites are relatively shallow, between 10-12 metres on average, and you’ll see beautiful reefs harbouring blue spotted rays, bamboo sharks, nudibranchs, scorpion fish and octopus. For those who prefer to stay above the waves, the snorkelling is almost as good!

2. Head to the beach

It’s the reason most people come to Phu Quoc – and you won’t be disappointed. Long Beach runs for over 20 kilometres along the western coast and is the most popular stretch on the island, with beachfront accommodation and restaurants all the way along. Most of Vietnam’s beaches face east, so watching the sunset here is quite a novelty! Venture a little further afield and you’ll find plenty of less well-known but equally beautiful beaches hiding around the coast.

3. Eat seafood at the night market

If you’re staying in Duong Dong, the biggest town on Phu Quoc, don’t miss the Dinh Cau night market. Serving a fantastic range of freshly caught seafood, this is one of the best dinner spots on the island.

4. Take a boat trip

There are many different companies offering cheap boat tours around Phu Quoc, getting you out to some of the tiny offshore islands, hidden beaches, and coral reefs. Be sure to read the reviews beforehand, however, as they are not all of a standard. Diving companies often offer boat trips too, and tend to be of a better quality than the cheaper versions.

5. Explore the forest

Over half of Phu Quoc is a protected national park, and most of the island is still covered in thick forest. What’s more, in 2006 the island was awarded UNESCO recognition as a World Biosphere Reserve thanks to its pristine nature and biodiversity. For those in search of a wilder experience, rent a motorbike and head through pepper plantations and jungle to the interior – or join an organised tour that will give you a deeper insight into the region. If you’re heading out independently, take the road towards Bai Thom from Duong Dong and turn off toward Ganh Dau for some of the best scenery.
