Like many a small town in rural India, now-sleepy Deogarh has earned its place in the history books. Formerly a vassal to the Kingdom of Mewar, a warlike state with its capital at Udaipur, its architecture still tells of a regal past — its crumbling old hilltop fort and grand, saffron-and-white Mahal (palace) still cared for by the descendants of the Rawats of Deogarh.

Staying at the royal family’s specially designed, traditionally constructed haveli, Dev Shere, is the best thing about a visit to Deogarh. Shatrunjai and Bhavna live full-time at Dev Shere, and have invested a huge amount of their time and energy in making it the very best experience of rural Rajasthan, from the luxurious trappings of the haveli itself to the curated experiences they offer.
