Nam Cat Tien National Park
Nam Cat Tien National Park, a jungle refuge for Vietnam's native large mammals, with small populations of elephants, leopards and even tigers believed to remain in the parks interior.

“Vietnam is a densely populated country, but in the depths of Nam Cat Tien's buttress-rooted jungle you feel you could walk for days without seeing another person.”
Tom Weston, Director
One hundred miles to the northeast of Saigon lies one of Vietnam's most important national parks, Nam Cat Tien. The 72,000 hectares of dense lowland rainforest and grassland is home to an enormous variety of flora and fauna, and is one of the final remaining refuges for wild native populations of elephant, leopard and reputedly even tiger. Visitors to the park are highly unlikely to encounter any of these large mammals, but the wonderful bird and butterfly life, not to mention the atmospheric jungle itself, make a visit well worth the effort of getting here.
There is a recovering population of primates also resident in the park, thanks to the efforts of local conservation groups, and treks to find them in the wild are available, though come with no guarantees. Rehabilitation and release centres for both bears and gibbons exist at the entrance to the park, and a visit is instructive in the challenge of conserving native species in a culture where the pet and bush meat trades continue to have a significant impact.
