“Hidden in the misty mountains, Sapa, and the surrounding area offers idyllic hiking trails, beautiful ethnic markets, and a remote and rural side to Vietnam so many miss. Get off the beaten track here to experience Vietnam's wilder side!”

Nestled in the Hoang Lien Mountains of north-western Vietnam, the popular market town of Sapa was originally built as a hill-station by the French in 1922. Dominated by the Fansipan mountain range beyond, Sapa is perfectly placed to offer some of the best trekking opportunities in Vietnam. The high altitude also makes for more comfortable temperatures during the hotter summer months. It is possible to arrange any length of walk from a short half day stroll through the rice paddies to longer treks for a week or longer taking you from village to village. Even short hikes offer the chance to get away from the bustle of town life, and provide an insight into a totally different side of Vietnam.
The region surround Sapa is home to a variety of different minority groups, many of whom still choose to wear their distinctive traditional, intricately woven, colourful garments. The regular village markets provide a fascinating opportunity to engage with the locals, take some fantastic pictures, and pick up a good deal on a water buffalo!
Due to its remote location Sapa is not easily accessible by road from Hanoi. The majority of visitors will take an overnight sleeper train from Hanoi to Lao Cai before winding your way up into the mountains to Sapa by car.
