Day 1-2

Wilpattu National Park

Leopard in Wilpattu
Highlights:

Morning and evening game drives through Wilpattu National Park

Stay in eco-centric accommodation surrounded by nature

Your wildlife adventure starts the moment you step off the plane. You’ll meet your private driver guide and be transferred straight to Wilpattu National Park on the northwest coast, for game drives around the dense forests and sand-rimmed lakes. Be on the lookout for their elusive leopards, as well as wild elephants, buffalo, crocodiles, deer and sloth bears. When you’re not rumbling along dusty trails in an open-top jeep, you can unwind back at your hotel or camp, surrounded by nature, binoculars in hand.

Transport

Day 1: Private car transfer from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) to Wilpattu – 3.5 hour drive

Day 3-5

Sigiriya

Elephants in Minneriya
Highlights:

Take a cycling tour of Polonnaruwa and learn about the local monkeys

Hop on an elephant safari in Minneriya or one of the nearby national parks

Hike Sigiriya Rock to explore the ancient fortress ruins on its summit

Heading further into Sri Lanka’s forested inland, Sigiriya makes the perfect base for exploring the Cultural Triangle’s wildlife and historical sites. Climb to the summit of Sigiriya’s ancient rock fortress and explore one of the island’s most elephant-rich regions on safari. As you walk through Polonnaruwa’s ancient, forested ruins, you'll learn about the behaviours and social dynamics of toque macaques, grey langurs and purple-faced leaf monkeys, the primates that inspired Disney Nature's Monkey Kingdom. And if you’re up for a nocturnal stroll, you might even spot the slender loris on an expert-led night walk in protected natural habitats nearby.

Transport

Day 3: Private car transfer from Wilpattu to Sigiriya – 2.5 hour drive

Day 6-7

Gal Oya National Park

Gal Oya Boat
Highlights:

Set sail on a sunset boat safari to see elephants swimming between the lake’s islands

Take game drives through Gal Oya’s landscape with an expert naturalist

Learn about local medicinal plants on a walk with the Veddah people, a forest-dwelling Indigenous group

For a privileged and peaceful safari experience, you’ll head east to the lesser-visited Gal Oya National Park. On a quiet evening boat ride, you’ll glide across gigantic lakes surrounded by forested hills and shores few tourists have walked along. You might even spot wild elephants swimming between the jungle-covered islands. Start the next day on a morning safari with a local naturalist, rolling through the quiet wilderness in search of wild boar, water buffalo, deer and sloth bears. The cultural highlight is a trek with the Veddah people, a forest-dwelling Indigenous tribe. You’ll walk through their ancestors’ ancient hunting grounds and cave dwellings, learning how this community has lived in harmony with the local flora and fauna for generations.

Day 6: Private car transfer from Sigiriya to Gal Oya – 4 hour drive

Day 8-9

Nuwara Eliya (Hill Country)

Sambar Deer in Horton Plains
Highlights:

A day exploring Horton Plains and World’s End, one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful natural landscapes

Head into Sri Lanka’s high country for a couple of cooler days. Visit the roaming wild deer in Horton Plains National Park, stretching across montane grassland and cloud forests. Hike to World's End where the plateau drops dramatically into the valleys below, and waterfalls and wildlife accompany your walk. In Nuwara Eliya, nicknamed “Little England” for its colonial-era architecture, you’ll visit Victoria Park for a quiet stroll through the well-kept gardens and a cup of local tea.

Transport

Day 8: Private car transfer from Gal Oya to Nuwera Eliya – 4.5 hour drive

Day 10-11

Yala National Park

Elephants in Yala
Highlights:

Look out for leopards on morning and evening game drives

Visit nearby Bundala, a beautiful spot for bird watching (optional)

This is the best place to spot leopards in Sri Lanka, and it draws big crowds because of it. But for those hoping to catch a glimpse of these elusive big cats, it’s well worth it. You’ll be whisked away on morning and evening game drives through the grassy plains and scrubland. Twitchers have the option of visiting nearby Bundala, one of Sri Lanka’s most important wetland reserves, for birdwatching across the lagoons, sand dunes and salt marshes. This area draws hundreds of bird species from herons, egrets and spoonbills to flocks of migratory flamingos.

Transport

Day 10: Private car transfer from Nuwara Eliya to Yala National Park – 3.5 hour drive

Day 12-14

Galle

Whale Watching
Highlights:

Stop in Udawalawe National Park to visit an elephant foster home at feeding time

Go on a whale watching tour from nearby Mirissa

Spend a day at your leisure, with the possibility of visiting a nearby sea turtle hatchery or taking a tour of Galle Fort

The south coast is the perfect place to slow things down. You’ll stop at an elephant foster home in Udawalawe National Park where orphaned elephant calves are rehabilitated to be released back into the wild. After watching feeding time here, you’ll head on to Galle. Tucked into the southwest corner of the island, this is a great base for relaxing on the nearby beaches, going whale watching, exploring Galle Fort with a local expert or cycling around the surrounding villages and countryside. Of course, you'd be forgiven for wanting to simply lounge by the pool.

Transport

Day 12: Private car transfer from Yala National Park to Galle via Udawalawe – 4 hour drive

Day 15: Private car transfer from Galle to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) – 2 hour drive
