Plan my trip Image Image Day 1-3Taipei Highlights: See the best of the city with your private guide – they’ll tailor the day to your family Practice Chinese calligraphy with brushes on rice paper Learn how to make Taiwan’s famous pineapple cakesTaipei is a great place to explore as a family. The subway is spotless and efficient, there are some lovely parks and there are bubble tea vendors on every street corner. Spend your time in Taipei in a way that gets you and your kids most excited. Whether that’s delicately scribing your own Chinese calligraphy, or making your version of Taiwan’s pineapple cake. With a guide, you’ll see Taipei from a different angle – heading up the gondola to Maokong (Cat Mountain).Your family will take a trip to the small village of Shifen, where you’ll write your wishes on a sky lantern and watch that lantern rocket to the heavens, bearing your hopes and dreams with it.Plus, there’s a bit of time to give back, helping out the volunteers of the Genesis Foundation, a charity who collect receipts that fall into Taiwan’s receipt lottery system. Any winnings go towards care and support for people with brain injuries. You’ll help prevent litter and make life a little brighter for someone and their family. TransportDay 1: Car transfer from Taoyuan International Airport to your Hotel (50 minutes) Day 4-6Yilan Highlights: Soak in the local thermal waters on a roof top hot spring pool Visit Hualien and experience the wild beauty of Taroko Gorge Watch the Symphony of Lights from a boat in the harbourEverybody loves hot springs, and what’s better than having a hot spring bath on the roof, or in your hotel room? But don’t sit in those waters all day – there’s plenty to see and do on the northern tip of Taiwan. You’ll take a day trip with your guide down the coast to Taroko Gorge, one of only three natural marble valleys in the world. It’s a drive that’s sure to fill your camera reel, the gorge’s teal waters offset by the sheer white cliffs and hillsides. As beautiful as the drive is, we know some families don’t do well sitting still for too long. So, you’ll stop at Xiangde Temple, a Buddhist monastery high up in the hills with sweeping views out over the gorge. Then, on the way home you’ll stop at Qixingtan beach. The following day you and your family get more hands on – with traditional indigo dying. Create your own souvenirs, wrapping a handkerchief with rubber bands to create a brilliant blue indigo pattern. Next, hop into wellies and pick some spring onions before making your own spring onion pancakes. The Yilan region is famous for its spring onions and here, you’ll get to cook and taste one of Taiwan’s signature dishes. TransportDay 4: Limited Express Train from Taipei to Yilan, 1 hour 12 minutesDay 5: Private car transfer Yilan to Taroko Gorge (2 hours) Day 7-8Sun Moon Lake Highlights: Bike and boat around Taiwan’s most famous mountain getaway Take in lake views from the colourful terraces of Wenwu templeSun Moon Lake is all about fresh air, lake views, and getting out and about in the great outdoors. Once you arrive from Yilan, you’ll get right into it with a gentle cycle on the elevated bike path – an easy, scenic loop that’s very family friendly. In the afternoon you’ll visit Wenwu temple, a palatial temple complex that combines Chinese folk religion with Confucianism. Since Confucious is considered “the teacher of teachers”, Wenwu is especially popular with students hoping for a good grade on upcoming tests. You’ll take a boat trip across the lake and spend some time in the town of Ita Thao. And if you’re in need of a refuel snack, we suggest a stack of nine frog-shaped cakes to share, a local treat based on a statue that shows how deep the lake is. If all nine frogs are in view, the water levels are lower than they should be! Day 7-8Taipei Highlights: Ride the rails back to Taipei on the sleek High Speed Rail Stop off for some wild Taiwanese ice cream flavours Make your own black tea to take homeWrap up your time in Sun Moon Lake with a visit to a tea factory. Here, you’ll try all sorts of tea flavoured snacks and make your own black tea bags to bring home with you. Your guide will then drive with you down out of the mountains to Miyahara Eye Hospital… but don’t worry it’s not time for your eye test just yet. Instead, you’ll be getting some of Taiwan’s most famous ice cream at a repurposed medical centre. In addition to the usual flavours, Miyahara has found flavour inspiration in local fruit and tea. Our favourites are Honey Grapefruit and Alishan Oolong. The last bit of the trip back to Taipei will be via the HSR, Taiwan’s swift and convenient High Speed Rail, based on the Japanese Shinkansen bullet trains. TransportDay 9: Private car Sun Moon Lake to Taichung (1 hour 30 minutes), High Speed Rail Taichung to Taipei (1 hour)Day 10: Car transfer to Taoyuan International Airport (50 minutes) Is this trip for you? Yes, Taiwan is a safe destination for travel. The crime rate and violent crime rate are some of the lowest in the world. While we advise the usual caution that travellers should always take when away from home, no special precautions are required. Taiwan does have some earthquakes, but they’re very used to them and the country has high quality construction that stands up to natural forces well. We do recommend you take care when crossing the road – the scooter drivers aren’t always as careful as they should be. Is Taiwan expensive? Visiting Taiwan is possible at various budgets, though pricewise, it’s closer to South Korea and Japan than South East Asia. While fancy cocktail bars and high-end, multi-course meals can hit your wallet, sampling several stalls at a night market could set you back under GBP 7 / USD $10 / Aud $14 for the evening. Day to day travel expenses are no more expensive than travelling in Europe or North America, and often will be less. Do Taiwanese speak English? The younger the person you are speaking to and the more urban the setting, the better your chances of being easily understood are. The more rural things get, the more likely that you may be relying on gestures and translation apps (which are always handy to have to hand). How many days does a trip to Taiwan need to be? This is entirely your choice. The length of your trip to Taiwan will depend on many factors, including cost, how much time you have available, how much of the country you want to experience, and the pace that you wish to travel at. Our Taiwan travel consultants will ask the right questions and together, we’ll come up with the best trip that fits you.If you’re looking for just a short stopover, our Taipei Stopover is a great introduction to Taipei and northern Taiwan in just five nights. On the other end of the spectrum, you can encircle the island in a little over two weeks on our Taiwan in Depth tour – covering cities, hot springs and national parks – all using Taiwan’s high-speed train network. Is Taiwan LGBTQ+ friendly? Taiwan is one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in Asia. Taiwan was the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage and Taipei hosts one of the largest Pride events in East Asia. Taiwan is very safe to travel as an LGBTQ+ individual or couple, even in more rural areas.
