Welcome to India! Your experienced local guide will ease you into the capital, so you won’t need to think through the jetlag. Visit the Jama Masjid mosque, weave through the winding streets of Chandni Chowk bazaar by rickshaw and stop at the Red Fort. If you’re keen to try as much of Delhi’s street food as possible, tell us and we’ll bring in a local food enthusiast from our little black book. They’ll steer you through Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad) and its best snack stops, from sizzling kebabs to syrupy sweets.

Moving from Old Delhi to New Delhi, the roads spread out and there’s a lot more green. Set within calm, beautifully landscaped gardens, Raj Ghat is the memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi.

Delhi is undeinably busy, but your first Oberoi hotel: The Oberoi Delhi provides a pocket of calm, with views of Humayun’s Tomb and the Delhi Golf Course, and is close to Khan Market and India Gate. Choose to eat dinner here and you won’t regret it. There’s on-site restaurants Baoshaun for modern Chinese dishes, or Dhilli for traditionally Delhi food, both mentored by Michelin starred chefs. Day 3

Agra

Mehtab Bagh Sunrise, Agra, India
Highlights:

See the Taj Mahal at sunrise

Visit the UNESCO Agra Fort

Visit Mehtab Bagh, a meticulously restored Mughal Garden across the Yamuna River

Most people come to Agra for the Taj Mahal, and staying at Oberoi Amarvilas Agra, you’re just 600 metres away. Every suite has a clear view of the dome. Rooms are spacious with Mughal-inspired design touches, and the whole site has a palatial feel – terraced lawns, pools and fountains.

Rise early and go for a sunrise visit of the marbelled legend. Up close, at this time of day, the surface shimmers from pink to gold as the light changes.

But Agra isn’t a one-site city. The red sandstone Agra Fort, built by Emperor Akbar in 1565, was once the main home of the Mughal rulers. Jama Masjid is nearby, Agra’s central, congregational mosque with three domes and a huge courtyard that feels noticeably cooler and quieter once you step inside. And then there’s Itmad-ud-Daulah’s tomb, (known as “baby Taj”).

Back at your hotel to relax this evening, put your name down for the “Dine Under the Stars”. A private, open-air dinner beside the burbling water features.

Jaipur’s is known for its pink-hued buildings, painted to greet Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1876, and the colour has stuck.

Flowers are a big part of daily life here, and you’ll join a flower focused tour to find out why. You’ll start at the morning market, where heaps of marigolds and roses are destined for wedding garlands and temple offerings. You’ll also make rose-studded sweets and meet a sustainable clothing company that recycles temple flowers.

As the sun begins to peak, head to Jantar Mantar the UNESCO World Heritage Site of gigantic astronomical instruments built in the early 18th century, including Samrat Yantra, and see the world's largest stone sundial in action.

Heading out into the city to explore, the City Palace is a great place to start, with its Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard). If you want to explore the city streets with a local, we’ll get in touch with Nishtha. She’s an excellent Udaipur guide (and all-round wonderful human being) who will tailor your tour to suit your interests, whether it’s architecture food, religion, or simply how people live here. If you’re feeling energetic, hop on a bike and take a tour around the lakes.

As the sun begins to dip behind the Aravalli hills on the horizon, take a sunset cruise across Lake Pichola and return for dinner.
