Cambodia New Year

Celebrate the New Year Khmer-style during a three day festival in mid-April.

The most important event of the Cambodian calendar is New Year, which according to ancient horoscopes takes place in mid-April. Phnom Penh empties out during this period as most Cambodians return to their ancestral roots in the countryside.

New Year is celebrated over three days. The first day is time to clean and decorate the home. Traditionally, fruit is placed on a table to welcome new spirits who will bring good luck for the year to come. Over the next two days Cambodian offer gifts to their elders, as well as the less fortunate. More ceremonies are held for people to apologise for any sins committed in the previous year and to receive blessings to the year ahead.

When to go: Cambodian New Year will take place from 13th to 15th April 2017, and from 14th to 16th April 2018.
