Inside Asia Tours: Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos

Mekong Delta cruises

In southwest Vietnam the great Mekong River splits into countless tributaries that fan out to form the vast, fertile Mekong Delta.

The Mekong River, the world's twelfth longest, flows south for more than 2,000 miles from the Tibetan Plateau until it reaches southwest Vietnam, where it reaches the Mekong Delta. This is Vietnam's rice bowl, where the combination of constant tropical temperatures, plentiful water and fertile land enable up to four rice harvests annually.

The delta also produces an abundance of exotic fruit: coconut, mango, pineapple, papaya, dragon fruit and the pungent durian. The myriad waterways of the delta make travel by boat the perfect means of exploration, and one that enables you to get amongst local life - much of which is conducted on the water via floating markets and waterfront stilt villages.

We highly recommend escaping the bustle and heat of Ho Chi Minh City and getting down to the delta. As it only takes a couple of hours to drive from Saigon, a day trip is perfectly possible - we suggest combining a short cruise with a little gentle cycling for a great day out.

If you have a little more time, however, we strongly recommend staying overnight in the area, either aboard one of the superb converted rice barges, operated by the top-class Bassac, Victoria or Mekong Eyes companies, or at one of the numerous lovely riverside resorts.
