Beng Mealea and the remote Angkorian temples

Beng Mealea and the remote Angkorian temples

Escape the crowds of the more recognised Angkorian temples with a visit to Beng Mealea and the ancient capital of Koh Ker.

Though the famous temples clustered around Angkor Wat gain most of the plaudits - and accordingly most of the visitors - we highly recommend heading out into the beautiful Cambodian countryside to visit some of the era's lesser-known temples.

Koh Ker, located 120 kilometres northeast of Siem Reap, bears an uncanny resemblance to the Mayan pyramids in Mexico, and was the capital of the Khmer Empire from 928-944 AD. This was a very interesting period in the Age of Angkor: an ambitious building programme saw forty temples constructed in the region, and the Koh Ker style of architecture reached its zenith. Many of the city's structures remain lost in the jungle to this day, as parts of the region have not yet been fully demined.

From Koh Ker we suggest that you continue on to the remarkable and relatively little-visited Beng Mealea, around 65 km from Siem Reap. Undiscovered for centuries, Beng Mealea has only recently been made accessible and remains unrestored and surrounded by jungle. Though it has some wooden walkways in place, it is one of the very few places that actually gives the opportunity to clamber around the overgrown temple and truly satisfy those Indiana Jones urges!
