Wat Phou Festival

Wat Phou Festival

The Angkorian ruins of Wat Phou in southern Laos host a fantastic celebration every February.

Wat Phou temple plays host to an annual festival in February which sees thousands of people climb the steep steps to the temple top to leave offerings of flowers and incense. As one of the region's most sacred sites, monks travel from all over Laos and neighbouring Thailand and Cambodia to attend.

The central Buddhist ceremony takes place on the full moon day with an early-morning parade of monks receiving alms. In the evening the lower shrine ruins are lit up by candlelight.

The celebrations go on for several days during which time you can see traditional dance performances and sporting competitions. There's also a huge market selling regional delicacies and handicrafts.

When to go: In 2017, the Wat Phou Festival will take place from 9th to 11th February.
