Hoi An Lantern Festival

Hoi An Lantern Festival

At full moon each month, the traditional streets of Hoi An's Old Town are illuminated with a myriad of coloured lights for the Hoi An Lantern Festival.

Hoi An's old town is a magical place to be at any time of year. We can't get enough of the cosy café culture, the silk crafts for sale, the fantastic restaurants and the brightly coloured houses.

But for an extra special twist, visit Hoi An during the full moon. Electricity is shut off and the streets are closed to traffic, transforming the old town into a magical flickering of candles and silk lanterns.

Traditionally the night of the full moon is the time for Vietnamese to honour their ancestors by offering fruit and flowers at family altars. Incense and fake money is burned in houses and businesses too in exchange for good luck and prosperity.

These days the Lantern Festival is a huge draw for tourists - so be prepared to wade through the crowds! But if you can cope with all the people, head to one of Hoi An's pagodas where monks perform candle-lit ceremonies.
