Siem Reap
The laid-back, low-rise town of Siem Reap sits on the edge of one of the world's most iconic historical wonders – the jungle-entwined ruins of Angkor. If you tire of temples the vast expanse of Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia's largest lake is nearby, home to rare birdlife and stilted villages.

“Awe-inspiring is a much-overused expression, but the scale and beauty of the temples of Angkor Wat are truly that. It can be busy, but it's easy to escape the crowds and feel the sense of discovery that makes travel so addictive.”
Tom Weston. Director
Siem Reap, is gateway to one of the most fantastic man-made sights on the planet: the vast complex of temples at Angkor. Seeing the sunrise over the world's largest religious building, Angkor Wat; feeling the gaze of countless stone faces at Bayon Temple or clambering around the jungle ruins of the "Tomb Raider Temple", Ta Prohm; all are unforgettable experiences. A millenium ago Angkor was one of the world's greatest cities; home to one million people and the seat of the ancient Khmer Empire. The temples were built by the Khmer ?god-kings'; blending tenants of Hinduism and Buddhism to represent heaven on earth, they are the ultimate expression of creative vision and spiritual devotion.
The town of Siem Reap itself is a laid-back, low-rise place, with a blend of colonial architecture, wide streets and a pretty river making the centre a lovely place to potter. Browse the market stalls and upmarket boutiques or eat Cambodia's best cuisine including the lovely amok coconut curry.
A short distance from here is Tonle Sap, the largest lake in South-East Asia, which provides fish and irrigation for half the country's population. During the rainy season (May to October) the lake swells from 2,500 sq km to more than 4 times its size, until the dry season when the water level drops and the lake empties back into the Mekong. This annual flooding makes Tonle Sap a unique breeding ground for many birds and fish. It's also the reason why central Cambodian houses are built on stilts. On the lake itself are many floating communities which make a pleasant day trip by boat from Siem Reap.
