Travel on the inside track in Vietnam
Head to corners of Vietnam that remain relatively untouched with InsideAsia Tours. Here are the experts' top five of the moment.
Ba Be National Park
Situated deep in the highlands of northern Vietnam, not too far from the border with China, Ba B? National Park is full of misty lakes, dark caverns and remote villages. The park is best explored either on foot or by boat: there are some superb hiking trails that wind through the jungle, and a trip down the river to the magnificent Phong Nha Cave - a huge tunnel passing right through the mountain that contains fascinating rock formations - is highly recommended. If time permits, stop off at Dau Dang Waterfall and make the most of the spectacular views.
A new Northern Vietnam Overland Adventure fully-tailored journey, which concludes in Ba Be National Park after exploring the diversity of the northern highlands, costs from £2,375 pp (two sharing) and includes 16 nights' B&B accommodation, 14 lunches and one evening meal.*
Cát Tiên National Park
Cát Tiên National Park (also known as Nam Cát Tiên), is located 100 miles northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, in southern Vietnam. It is one of the last remaining refuges for wild populations of elephant, leopard and tiger, and is home to a wide variety of colourful birds.
A new Indochina Conservation fully-tailored journey, combining Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, and featuring a night safari at the Forest Floor Eco Lodge, costs from £3,580 pp (two sharing) and includes 14 nights' B&B accommodation, eight lunches and six evening meals.*
Côn Dao Island
An hour's flight from Ho Chi Minh City, Côn Dao offers hidden coves, tropical jungle and charming, colonial towns. Despite its sparkling white sand and brilliant blue waters fringed with rich green jungle, Con Dao's beaches are mercifully quiet, clean, and idyllic. Avoid the "official" Dam Trau Beach that can be busy with visitors, instead, search out your own secret idyll and enjoy the spectacular driving routes along Côn Dao's coastal roads.
A Luxury Vietnam fully-tailored journey, including three nights at the Six Senses Con Dao and a two night cruise on a luxurious two-cabin vessel, costs from £4,190 pp (two sharing) and includes 16 nights' B&B accommodation, seven lunches and three evening meals (staying in exclusive hotels and resorts, plus on two luxury boats).*
Mai Châu is a rural district located in the Ḥa B́nh Province, northwest Vietnam, about 65 km from the regional capital and about 160 km from Hanoi. Home to the Black Thai and White Thai tribes (whose ancestors settled here from Thailand), Mai Châu is known for its beautiful scenery - think emerald green terraced rice fields, bright cobalt lakes and mist-clad mountains - making it a top location for hiking or cycling.
A Vietnam Discovery fully-tailored journey, which incorporates a stay in Mai Châu Ecolodge (a traditional house on stilts), costs from £2,750 pp (two sharing) and includes 19 nights' B&B accommodation, seven lunches and two evening meals.*
With its towering peaks, terraced hillsides and stilted villages, Hà Giang Province, situated in North Vietnam by the Chinese border, is the newest addition to the Vietnamese travel scene. Hà Giang has seen little development, and the tribes are welcoming and let you into their homes, providing first-hand insight into their way of life.
A Vietnam Adventure fully-tailored journey, which allows travellers to spend three nights' at the homes of locals in Hà Giang, costs from £2,745 pp (two sharing) and includes 16 nights' B&B accommodation, 14 lunches and six evening meals.*
*All journeys include most or all domestic transport, some private guiding and excursions. International flights extra.
