Start your journey in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's largest and most exciting city. Known locally as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City combines a strong French colonial influence in its broad boulevards and architectural style with some of the country's best modern and military art, displayed in galleries and museums across the city. New buildings appear here almost every day, and a trip to the top of one of the many sky towers is a fantastic way to view the city.

Next you'll move up Vietnam to Hoi An, where buildings reflecting the multitude of foreign influences on this once-great trading port line the riverfront, while vibrant blue fishing boats bob in the harbour. Hoi An also boasts some of the oldest architecture in Vietnam: the My Son ruins. Dating from the Cham era of the 7th-13th centuries, these fascinating ruins have felt the effects of time but still give an evocative insight into the Vietnam of old.

From here you'll move on to Hue, which served as the national capital during Vietnam's final imperial era in the 1800s. Visit the imposing citadel and tombs of past emperors before heading to the traditional garden houses, centred around the family shrines.

In the north of Vietnam, stop off in Hanoi, a city of lakes and distinct districts that reflect the diverse influences that have shaped the city over the centuries. Admire the faded glory of the architecture and wide boulevards of the French Quarter, or delve into the cafes, markets, trinket shops and art galleries of the narrow Old Quarter lanes. Pay a visit to the Ethnology Museum for a chance to see the traditional housing styles of the ethnic hill tribes in north Vietnam.

Following this, you'll fly to Laos for a complete change of pace. In Luang Prabang, capital of an ancient Laos kingdom, you'll be treated to an architectural insight tour with the renowned expert Francis Engelmann, who helped prepare the proposal that gave Luang Prabang its UNESCO World Heritage status. On the tour, you'll explore traditional Lao architecture interspersed with colonial French villas and mansions.

Finally, continue south to your final stop, the current capital: Vientiane. In stark contrast to the popular image of thronging Asian capitals, Vientiane is a sleepy town sprawled along the banks of the Mekong. Explore the mix of religious stupas and modern French-influenced government buildings before heading out to Buddha Park, a bizarre Hindu and Buddhist statue-filled field and a fascinating way to end your tour of this fascinating region.
