Monks' alms in Luang Prabang

Every morning at sunrise, watch saffron-robed monks walk quietly through the streets of Luang Prabang.

Start early and head into Luang Prabang to watch the morning alms, a peaceful ceremony during which the monks of the city file through the streets collecting offerings in silence. It is a dignified and meditative ritual demonstrating the monks' vows of austerity and humility, while lay Buddhists gain merit through providing donations.

Your tour guide will take you to Luang Prabang's main street where you will have the chance to observe the giving kao kai noi (sticky rice) to the monks and learn about the intricacies of the ceremony. It is more respectful for guest to watch from a distance and not participate in the occasion unless it is meaningful to them.
