Insider Experience: Life on the Railroads

Venture through the communities alongside Hanoi's Railway and meet with the last remaining Hang Trong artist at his home.

Taking a stroll along the Hanoi's neighbourhood railroads (not to worry the train only trundles along twice a day!) you will get a glimpse and a chance to observe an entirely different side of local life of the average Hanoian away from the tourist trail. Originally built in the 1880s during French colonial rule, these tracks remain a vital part of everyday life in Hanoi.

Engage in a casual chat with the locals who are cooking in front of their house or playing chess by the tracks before heading towards a tiny home to visit its 80-year-old resident and the last remaining Hang Trong folk artist left.

Hang Trong folk paintings are named after a street in downtown Hanoi, where the artworks were sold during the Tet or Lunar New Year Festival. Pictures like the four seasons and the three men symbolize happiness, luck, and longevity have been hung in Hanoian houses for hundreds of years as a wish of good luck and abundance. However, it is now a dying art form and to be able to meet with, and gain insight from the last artist of his kind is a truly memorable and fascinating experience.

The day ends as you continue down the tracks towards the railway station at the other side of the Red River and mingle with locals during a ten-minute train ride back into the heart of Hanoi, admiring the beauty of Vietnam while heading back into the city's old quarter.
