Enclosed by craggy mountains, Meo Vac is a small town in the rural Ha Giang region of Vietnam – close to the border with China in the northeast of the country.
The Ha Giang region is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in Vietnam - in fact, such is its natural appeal that much of the southern area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Protected Geo Park. A short drive from Meo Vac town will bring you to Ma Pi Leng Pass, where the views from "Heaven's Gate" truly deserve the term breathtaking, and virtually every bend from here to Dong Van brings a new photo opportunity.
Nearby Dong Van, one of Vietnam's most northern towns, is located less than 10 kilometres from the Chinese border is growing quickly. Away from the main streets the town still retains some old-fashioned charm, with a cluster of traditional Hmong houses in the old quarter, many old clay buildings and picturesque rice terraces on the outskirts of town.
Meo Vac makes an excellent overnight stop as you head north from Ba Be National Park, providing a surprisingly dramatic contrast to Ba Be's lush rainforests, lakes and waterfalls. If you find yourself here on a Sunday, pay a visit to the the weekly livestock market. This gathering place for the Hmong minorities provides an interesting snapshot of the cultural diversity of northern Vietnam.
