Inside Asia Tours: Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos

4000 Islands

In southern Laos the mighty Mekong fragments into a myriad tributaries, forming the 4,000 Islands that give the region its name. In this region you can explore the Angkorian ruins at Wat Phou, track the elusive Irrawaddy River dolphin or visit the coffee plantations of the Bolaven Plateau.

“The Mekong of my imagination! Here is the place to doze in a hammock beneath the palm trees, watching village children play as the Mekong River glides past.”

Ruth Hubbard, Product Manager

Si Phan Don or the 4,000 Islands is the very last outpost of Laos before you reach Cambodia. Here the Mekong River splits into a hundred or more tributaries washing around thousands of islands and sandbars.

The area offers a fascinating glimpse into rural, village life supported by the river. The inhabited islands, each with a different feel, are largely self-sustaining as locals grow rice, sugar cane and coconuts, catch fish and weave fabrics and bamboo.

Don Khong Island has the more upmarket accommodation options and is quieter than the more backpackery Don Det. Don Khone Island is a nice blend of the two with a good choice of restaurants and a scattering of colourful, colonial villas. Don Khone is worth exploring by bike or tuk tuk. From this island you can visit Tad Somphamit or Lippi Falls. Meaning "trap spirit" the locals revere this and other waterfalls believing they catch bad spirits. The falls are also the reason why it's not possible to travel the entire length of the Mekong by boat. Beneath the falls towards the Cambodian boarder live a small and increasingly rare group of Irrawaddy dolphins, sometimes visible from a boat.
