Pyin Oo Lwin Map

“Arriving in Pyin Oo Lwin is like arriving in Britain of the 1920s - with a few differences! A visit here is guaranteed to take you back a few decades, with beautiful colonial buildings around every corner.”

Charlotte Bower, Travel Consultant

Until 1896, Pyin Oo Lwin was nothing more than a small Danu village some distance north of Mandalay. Seeking an escape from the searing heat of the Mandalay summer, the British colonial authorities set about turning the area into a hill station, and named it Maymyo (literally "May's town") after Colonel James May who was stationed here. A railway was constructed from Mandalay, and Edwardian-style summer cottages built to house the summer administration. This colonial heritage remains a major attraction for modern visitors.

At 1050 metres (3506 ft) above sea level, Pyin Oo Lwin is noticeably cooler than the dry, tropical lowlands of Mandalay. The mild climate prompted the local governor to establish the botanical gardens in Pyin Oo Lwin, and makes the area perfect for the cultivation of flowers, fruit and vegetables. Besides its famous flowers, Pyin Oo Lwin is at the heart of Myanmar's blossoming coffee bean industry, and is one of the country's largest centres for sericulture (silkworm rearing).

Due to its colonial history, Pyin Oo Lwin has a higher than average proportion of Anglo-Burmese and Anglo-Indian inhabitants, whilst its location close to the Chinese border has attracted many Chinese immigrants to settle here in recent years. The result is an unusually rich and diverse local demographic. Though Myanmar's government changed the name of the town to Pyin Oo Lwin, many local inhabitants continue to refer to their hometown as Maymyo.
