Train journey over the Goteik Viaduct

Jump aboard the slow train to Hsipaw and join us on Burma's most celebrated rail journey across the imposing Goteik Viaduct.

For fans of great train journeys or impressive feats of engineering, the journey over the Goteik Viaduct in Shan State is likely to be a highlight. Midway between the towns of Pyin Oo Lwin, a former British colonial Hill Station, and Hsipaw in the Shan hills, the viaduct was, at the time of its construction in 1900, the largest railway trestle in the world.

The components for this engineering marvel were made by the Pennsylvania Steel Company and the parts were shipped from the United States. The rail line was constructed as a way for the British Empire to further expand their influence in the region, but remains an impressive (and useful) remnant of this earlier era. At its highest point the viaduct towers more than 100 metres (330 ft) above the river below, and stretches for around 700 metres (2,300 ft) between the two hillsides on either side of the gorge.

For those not intending to visit Hsipaw, a journey over the viaduct can be arranged as a day trip from Pyin Oo Lwin.
