Thingyan Water Festival

Thingyan Water Festival

Prepare for a soaking! Join the locals in the Burmese calendar's most boisterous event - the annual water-splashing festival.

Perhaps the most important festival in the Burmese calendar is Thingyan, the Buddhist New Year, which takes place from 13 to 16 April and is celebrated in the traditional manner - by throwing water over all comers. At this time of year temperatures across Myanmar (Burma) are at their highest, so an occasional drenching can come as a welcome relief, though be prepared that the locals take especial pleasure in dowsing their foreign guests!
