Inside Asia Tours

Bagan's pagodas & stupas

A vast plain scattered with over two thousand ancient Buddhist stupas; Bagan offers one of the most spectacular landscapes in Asia if not the world.

There are countless ways to appreciate the dramatic landscape of Bagan: from the water, whilst cruising on the mighty Irrawaddy River that hugs the Bagan plain to the north and west; from the air, on a breathtaking sunrise hot air balloon ride; on foot, by bike, or in a horse-drawn cart. Whichever you choose we guarantee this will be an unforgettable experience.

The Bagan Archaeological Zone covers an area of 13 by 8 kilometres, and scattered between the dusty farmland and rows of tamarind trees are over 2,500 structures; a mixture of pagodas and stupas dating back to the 11th and 13th centuries. At the height of the Pagan Empire during which they were constructed, they are believed to have numbered more than 10,000. Contemporaries of the great Khmer Empire, the Pagan kings created a landscape akin in scale and grandeur to the temples of Angkor, Southeast Asia's other world-class archaeological site.

We recommend including a few days in the Bagan area, exploring the quiet corners of the region at a pace that allows you to absorb the immensity of the achievement.
