Little-visited Hpa An is a small, riverside town set in the beautiful, lush countryside of southern Myanmar – a landscape covered in vegetation and studded with limestone towers. One such tower is home to Hpa An's most famous sight: the improbably balanced Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda.
“Few visitors make it down to Hpa An, but that makes the welcome even warmer. The karst scenery around town is delightful, and the Buddhist grottoes carved into the natural caves are fascinating.”
Tom Weston, Sales Director
What the bustling little town of Hpa An lacks in grand sites, it more than makes up for in warmth of welcome and charm. Set on the banks of the pretty Thanlwin River in southern Myanmar, The town itself is a pleasant place to wander, visiting the morning market and riverside Shweyinhmyaw Pagoda - but it is the surrounding countryside that holds the greatest appeal for the visitor.
The lush scenery, studded with towering limestone peaks and traced with winding rivers, conceals a number of fascinating Buddhist grottoes - all barely touched by tourism. Row upon row of identical Buddha statues welcome the visitor to Mount Zwe Kabin, the area's tallest mountain, whose summit rewards visitors fabulous views of the surrounding region. Kaw Gun Cave, meanwhile, is packed to the ceilings with tens of thousands of Buddha images large and small.
The most impressive sight in the region, however, has to be Kyauk Ka Lat: a golden stupa perched on top of a soaring, sheer-sided limestone pinnacle at the centre of a man-made lake, surrounded by green mountains. The pinnacle itself almost defies belief, tapering towards its base as though balanced on a pinpoint, ready to topple into the water below.
Few travellers make it to this part of the country, but those who do find an enchanting, untouched pocket of rural life in one of Myanmar's most lush and stunning regions.
