Biking to Dhala and Twante

Biking to Dhala and Twante

Jump on the ferry from Yangon and spend a day meandering through local villages en route to Twante - a lovely contrast to the bustle of the city.

A short ferry ride across the Yangon River from the hustle and bustle of Burma's greatest city is what feels like  another world; the quiet, undeveloped village of Dhala. The jetty buzzes with activity as a mini street market is there to sell snacks and other items to the ferry passengers. The boat ride to Dhala takes fifteen minutes and offers great views of the waterways as well as a fun chance to interact with the curious locals as they make their way across the river.

Upon reaching Dhala, after a brief visit to the wet market, hop on your bike and head out into the Burmese countryside. Passing rice paddies, stilt homes, and various farms, head off-road on rough tracks to villages buried deep in bamboo forests.

On the way to Twante, stop in at the Snake Temple, where local monks believe that the snakes are reincarnations of previous local monks from the region. There are over 50 Burmese Pythons that inhabit the temple and they roam freely, slithering around the shoulders of Buddha images and in and out of windows. Do not worry though, these pythons are actually vegetarians! The monks feed them a healthy diet of milk and rice and they are harmless.

On arrival at the small fishing village of Twante, stop for lunch and a cold drink by the river before boarding your private boat back to Yangon.
