Expedition cruising on the Chindwin River

Journeys on the Chindwin River offer a chance to explore otherwise inaccessible parts of northern Burma in comfort and style.

Each day of the journey you will have the chance to disembark to explore the towns and villages that lie on the banks of the river, learning about the fascinating history of an area rarely seen by outsiders.

A number of companies offer cruises on the Chindwin, with the RV Pandaw Zawagyi a particular favourite. This small ship has been specially designed with a very low draught to ensure it can pass over the numerous sandbanks that often prevent the larger ships from progressing further upstream - the only ship to journey beyond Homalin into Nagaland.

Reflecting the stark seasonal differences in Myanmar's climate, the Irrawaddy and Chindwin Rivers have a dramatic ten-metre average height difference between the rainy season (May to October) and the dry season (November to April). Cruises operate from the end of the rainy season through to the end of March, when water levels become too low for many vessels to operate.
