Longtail boats on Inle Lake

Longtail boats on Inle Lake

Get out on Inle Lake in the local way: aboard a longtail boat that glides through the narrow channels between floating farms and stilt houses.

Although Inle Lake is undoubtedly a scenically beautiful region, this is very much a living environment sculpted by the people who have made the lake their home and livelihood for countless generations. The longtail boat is the preferred method of transport on the lake, for the traditional leg-rowing fishermen and the farmers who tend the unique floating gardens, built up from thick strips of water hyacinth and mud and anchored to the lake bottom with bamboo poles.

The best way to truly experience this aquatic world is to join the locals and get out on the lake, letting your boatman guide you through the network of canals to the stilt villages that sit in the shallow waters at the lake edge.
