Taunggyi Balloon Festival

Not far from Inle Lake is the site one of Burma's most celebrated annual events: the spectacular Taunggyi Balloon Festival.

A short drive from the town of Nyaung Shwe at the head of Inle Lake is the provincial town of Taunggyi. The town won't feature on most itineraries to Myanmar, but for two nights a year it hosts the most famous version of the annual Balloon Festival, a nationwide celebration that falls one week before the full moon of Tazaungmone, the eighth month in the Burmese calendar.

Being tied to the lunar calendar, the date of the festival changes each year - but it usually falls in mid-November. The festival is known as Tazaungdaing in Burmese, and in Taunggyi the celebrations feature giant hot air balloons of various colours and shapes released into the sky above town.
