Now is the time to visit Burma, spending much of the post-war period isolated from the outside world, the vast country remains largely undiscovered with fascinating cultural traditions and beautiful places to explore.

We'll begin this adventure on the banks of the mighty Irrawaddy river in Mandalay. This former capital was home to the last Burmese king, Thibaw, the remnants of his dynasty, and the preceding dynasties based in the region, make this a fantastic introduction to Burma, alongside artisan markets, historic monasteries and the iconic U Bein Bridge.

A leisurely day cruise downriver is the perfect way to arrive at Bagan, one of the region's most iconic and spectacular destinations. You'll head to an elevate temple to gain your bearings and enjoy a spectacular sunset over the 2,000 scattered pagodas and temples. For an alternative view, float serenely above them at sunrise in a hot air balloon. After the cultural and historic glories of Mandalay and Bagan, including workshops with locals, we will set out to Mount Popa, a renowned hilltop shrine.

Our next stop provides a marvellous counterpoint. Flying east, we'll head into the hills to visit Kalaw, a former British hill station set amongst a landscape of plantations, forests and minority villages. As the country with the world's greatest number of working elephants, it seems fitting to pay a visit to an ethical elephant's retirement home, Green Hill Elephant camp.

Bidding farewell to the gentle giants, we'll continue to arguably the most scenic highlight of the tour, Inle Lake. A contrast of wooden stilt villages; spot fisherman, visit morning markets and take a boat tour to Sagar with its sunken stupas, beautiful but rarely visited by tourists. You will experience the unique floating Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival with its gilded barges. This festival is one of the most important and largest in Burma, the procession and elaborate barges make their way from village to village around Inle Lake, with leg-rowing races and festivities each day. Festivals are when the local people are at their most open, friendly and relaxed, so this is sure to be a highlight of your trip.

The tour come to an end in Yangon, Burma's economic centre and a city looking towards a bright future. A sunset visit to the spectacular gold Shwedagon pagoda is a fitting end to our memorable journey through Burma.
