Shwedagon Pagoda

The magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda is a highlight of any visit to Yangon.

Shwedagon Pagoda is Burma most beloved religious landmark. Standing at 99 metres tall and covered from top to toe in gold leaf, Shwedagon's glittering stupa can be seen shining in the sun for miles.  Although the origins of the pagoda are unclear, the local legend states that the original structure has stood watch over Yangon for over 2,500 years, making it the oldest Buddhist pagoda in the world. Whether the legend is true or not, Shwedagon is the most revered and respected religious monument in Burma, and has been astonishing foreign travellers for hundreds of years.

In the evening the local people come to pray and socialise with friends and family, making this a perfect chance to understand more of the Burmese people.
