Inle Lake is one of Myanmar's most popular destinations, and deservedly so – for it is a place of true natural beauty. The image of leg-rowing fishermen on the lake has become a symbol of Myanmar as a whole, and the stilt villages along its shores have earned it the moniker “Venice of the East”.
“The combination of a beautiful natural setting and the fascinating native cultures makes Inle Lake one my favourite places in Asia. It's somewhere I never want to leave.”
Tyler Palma, Group Tours Ground Manager & Senior Tour Leader
Located in the heart of the Nyaung Shwe valley in the southern Shan State, Inle Lake is the second largest natural lake in Myanmar. At 1,328 metres above sea level, this vast and picturesque body of water is renowned for its floating villages and gardens, and it is well worth taking the time to explore its shores.
Inthas (native lake-dwellers) have developed a unique one-legged rowing style to navigate the lake, while fishermen use large, conical nets to land their catch - a technique that has been made famous by countless travel photographers in recent years. Around 120 villages surround the lake, many of which grow their produce using a floating farm technique, whereby metre-thick slices of compacted vegetation are cut from the lake shore, floated into place and pinned with bamboo poles, allowing them to rise and fall with the height of the lake. These are covered in compost and planted with tomatoes in neat floating fields, tended by boat.
Visitors to Inle can choose to stay at one of the many resorts around the lake shore, or stay in the small town of Nyaung Shwe (pronounced with a silent "N"), where a number of small restaurants and cafés provide a little more choice in the evening.
