“For those with a taste for archaeology the remarkable mystery presented by the Plain of Jars is sure to justify the effort required to get to remote Phonsavan.”

Tom Weston, Director

Xieng Khouang, known locally as Phonsavan, is a small town tucked away in a remote corner of northeast Laos famed for the fields of enigmatic stone jars found nearby. The town itself was totally rebuilt after it was destroyed during the secret war in Laos in the 1960s, and is now located 30 km away from where it was originally sited.

The Plain of Jars are a collection of 2,000 year old stone jars ranging in size from 70cm up to 3 or 4 metres. Their true origin and purpose remains a mystery, though it seems that they were carved into boulders. Several researches lead by the French archaeologist Madeleine Colani in the 30's suggested that they could be old graves, but to this day they remain an enigma.

Nearby Muang Khoun is one place in the old provincial capital that was not destroyed during the American bombing raids, and is home to a unique sitting giant Buddha as well of some old pagodas that lies in ruins. The foundation and columns of Wat Pia Wat are still standing and close to this site, there is also an old 30 m high stupa constructed in the Lan Xang/Lanna period.
