The delightful karst scenery of Vang Vieng, cut through by meandering rivers, is the perfect place for caving, climbing and kayaking. Having shaken off its reputation as a backpacker haven the town has reinvented itself as a centre for outdoor activities, and it remains a beautiful spot for relaxing
“I could never tire of the stunning scenery around Vang Vieng. Dramatic karst mountains rising from the jungle while the mighty Nam Song River weaves its way below.”
Matt Spiller, Agent Manager
As the Nam Song River winds its way south through the small town of Vang Vieng something spectacular happens to the scenery. Huge limestone mountains rise through the mist creating one of the most picturesque spots in South-East Asia.
Welcome change has come to Vang Vieng. Once the number one party destination for backpackers in Laos - loud, drunk, half-naked and causing havoc in the river - the Lao government has now clamped down on the mayhem closing down the dangerous rope swings, zip wires and all-night bars. This has given Vang Vieng room to breathe and relaunch itself as a destination for eco-adventure.
The karst mountains are honeycombed with unexplored caves and hiking trails making this the best place in Laos for walking, rock climbing and caving as well as kayaking or simply floating gently down the river in a rubber tube. Other options include hot air ballooning, mountain biking and quad biking.
Granted the town is still a little shabby and the restaurants all serve bland menus of pizzas and hamburgers, but there are now some lovely hotels serving great Lao cuisine and everywhere you turn the views are to die for.
