Inside Vietnam: Cambodia Laos

Thakhet

Thakhet in central Laos is a sleepy town located on the banks of the Mekong River and the capital of Khammuan province.

Thakhet Map

Central Laos is home to some spectacular sights including impressive limestone karst scenery and the immense Kong Lor Cave. Thakhet makes an ideal base for exploring the nearby caves, landscapes and local villages and is a good place to break the journey further south along route 13 to Pakse and the 4000 islands. The town is also the start and end point for the ?Thakhet loop' a multi-day circular route, popular with backpackers on motorbikes, taking you hundreds of kilometres through some of the most picturesque parts of central Laos.

The town is less visited than Savannakhet although its popularity is increasing, this is in part down to its proximity to Thailand. The Thai-Lao friendship bridge, and entry point into Laos from Thailand, is located 13km north of the town. Walking around the small town you will find reminders of days gone by, once grand but now run-down French villas, faded colonial style buildings and overgrown gardens.
