Although the town of Stung Treng may not have much to divert the visitor heading to or from the Laos border, the delightful countryside nearby, bisected by the Mekong and San Rivers, is home to some excellent sustainable tourism projects justifying a little extra time.
“Laid-back and friendly, Stung Treng is a welcoming Cambodian town just 50km from the Laos border.”
Ruth Hubbard, Product Manager
A typical Cambodian riverside town, Stung Treng is notable as the last (or first!) town on the road to the Laos boarder. Located on the confluence of the Mekong and the San River, Stung Treng is a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside, taking a day trip up the Mekong to see a school of rare Irrawaddy dolphins or simply enjoying the town's little market.
Stung Treng has some interesting eco-tourism projects that are well worth a look. Just outside the town centre is the Mekong Blue Women's Development Centre. Here women from impoverished backgrounds are given the opportunity to learn silk weaving and dying. Visitors can take a tour of the weaving workshops and there is a small shop and café.
Le Tonle Tourism Training Centre in the centre of Stung Treng boasts a great restaurant and modest rooms where young people undertake a year's training course following modules including English language, computer literacy; Khmer history, geography and ecology, housekeeping, cooking, catering and customer service.
