Once known as the Pearl of the Orient, Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh is a lively and engaging city, which is in the process of regaining its former glory following the dark days of the Khmer Rouge regime.
“Phnom Penh is a fantastic city - the food is incredible and the riverside setting makes it a wonderful place for a leisurely couple of days.”
Tara Engelen, Tour Leader
Phnom Penh, the 'Pearl of the Orient', sits at the confluence of the mighty rivers of the Mekong and the Tonlé Sap, and was once considered amongst the most beautiful cities in Asia. Despite its recent turbulent history it retains a colonial charm that complements a growing confidence and vitality.
As little as five years ago Phnom Penh was considered an adventurous travel option, a bit dangerous and certainly rough around the edges. These days, however, it has rebranded itself as 'the charming city', and the combination of welcoming people, lively café culture and world-class food ensures it lives up to its new reputation. Must-sees include the Silver Pagoda at King Sihamoni's Royal Palace and (if you can face it) the sobering Tuol Sleng Museum, an infamous prison during the Khmer Rouge-era, now a museum and memorial to the atrocities carried out during this period.
