Inside Vietnam: Cambodia Laos

Pakse

Riverside Pakse, the administrative capital of southern Laos, looks out over the Mekong to neighbouring Thailand. With the main airport in the region Pakse acts as the gateway for visitors exploring the highlights of southern Laos, including the 4,000 Islands and Champasak.

“The fertile plantations around Pakse produce some of the finest coffee beans in the world. Lao coffee doesn't get any better than this!”

Ruth Hubbard, Product Manager

Sandwiched between Thailand and Vietnam, Laos thins to the south but retains its laid-back charm around the main town Pakse. Here the Mekong and the Se Don River converge providing a pretty backdrop to Pakse's dusty streets. Pakse was founded by the French in 1905 as an administrative outpost and many colonial-style buildings remain today.

While there's not much in the way of sightseeing in Pakse, the town serves as a great base for visits to the fertile Bolavan Plateau. As well as enjoying the cool mountain climate here there are numerous lovely waterfalls, pretty minority villages and plantations which produce some of the world's finest coffee. For fans of kaa-feh Lao or Lao coffee a plantation tour and tasting is highly recommended. Green tea is also grown here.

It's also possible to reach the Sepian National Protected Area for trekking and homestays. Just 2 kilometres south-east of Pakse near the Japanese bridge across the Mekong is Talat Dao Heuang, the largest market in southern Laos and a great place to bargain for coffee.
