Inside Vietnam: Cambodia Laos

Mekong Delta

Drift along the endless waterways, cycle through lush rice paddies and soak up the beauty of the tropical Mekong Delta. Day trips from Ho Chi Minh City provide a delightful taste of the Delta, but for a more immersive experience we recommend taking an overnight cruise, getting out on the water.

Mekong Delta Map

“The atmosphere of the Delta is unlike anywhere else in Vietnam; a gentle pace of life plays out here in keeping with the abundance of the region. The locals pride themselves on being the friendliest people in the country, and I'd have to agree!”

Tom Weston, Director

The Mekong River, the world's twelfth longest, flows south for more than 2,000 miles from the Tibetan Plateau, through China, Burma, Laos and Cambodia until it finally reaches Southwest Vietnam. Here it splits into great tributaries that spread out to form the vast and fertile Mekong Delta. This is Vietnam's rice bowl, where the combination of constant tropical temperatures, plentiful water and fertile land enable up to four rice harvests annually. The delta also produces an abundance of exotic fruit: coconut, mango, pineapple, papaya, dragon fruit and the pungent durian in season.

The myriad waterways of the delta make the boat the perfect means of exploration, and one that enables you to get amongst local life, much of which is conducted on the water. Day excursions from Ho Chi Minh city into the Delta are easily arranged, but to really get a feel for the incredible atmosphere of the region an overnight cruise is the perfect option. From converted rice barges to elegant cruise ships there are options to suit all styles and budgets.
