Kampong Thom

Stopover town for those travelling between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, boasting pre-Angkorian temples. Ancient Sambor Prei Kuk was the precursor to the celebrated temples of Angkor, and if your explorations make you peckish visit nearby Skuon, roasted tarantula capital of Cambodia.

“Kampong Thom is a great springboard for the oldest temples in Cambodia: Sambor Prei Kuk and the newest: the riot of glitzy pagodas atop Mount Santuk”

Ruth Hubbard, Product Manager

On the main road between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh sits the town of Kampong Thom, literally "big town on the river". For many tourists, Kampong Thom is simply a highway lunch stop, but away from the main road there's a great market and a couple of lovely boutique hotels overlooking the Stung Sen River. That's not to mention the main reason for an overnight stay in Kampong Thom; to visit two very contrasting temples.

Sambor Prei Kuk is a cluster of ancient temples which may have provided the inspiration for Angkor Wat built five centuries later. Dating back to the sixth century, Sambor Prei Kuk boasts some of the oldest structures in the country. Scattered through the forest, the brick temples are in various states of decay, some almost completely swallowed by trees.

Phnom Santuk couldn't be more different. Situated on the top of a holy mountain, 800 steps climb skywards to a riotous gaggle of multi-coloured temples including naga snakes, dragons, Buddhas and pagodas. Glitzy or gaudy depending on your taste, the temple is well worth the tiring climb for the panoramic views across to Tonle Sap.
