“Dien Bien Phu won't feature as a destination on most trips to Vietnam, but for those with an interest in the turbulent history of 19th and 20th century Indochina there are few more significant locations than this.”

Tom Weston, Director

The frontier city of Dien Bien Phu, located in the northwest of Vietnam close to the border with Laos, was the site of the decisive battle of the First Indochina War (1946 - 1954). The French Indochina garrison based in the city was finally defeated by the Viet Minh forces after a 57-day siege, a defeat which marked the end of French involvement in the region and led to the partitioning of Vietnam into North and South.
