Cambodia may not be first on your list for a wildlife themed holiday, but the country's huge variety of habitats and species are waiting to be discovered. This itinerary gives you access to some of the most important wildlife locations and protected areas throughout the country. You'll explore birding sites in remote locations, discover hidden temples in dry forests, go on the search for elusive gibbons, and get up close and personal with elephants.

The trip begins in Siem Reap, the gateway to the fabled temples of Angkor where, after discovering these ancient ruins you will leave the tourist-dominated town behind and head into the isolated wilderness. Explore the northern wildlife sanctuaries of Beng Per and Kulen Promtep, staying in stilt houses and eco-friendly huts whilst trekking through the jungle to uncover the diverse wildlife of the region.

After returning back to Siem Reap, take a short flight to Cambodia's lively capital, before heading to the wild province of Mondulkiri in the east of the country, staying in safari tents and tracking gibbons deep within the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary. Throughout the journey you'll have the chance to see some of Cambodia's endangered birds and wildlife, including the Giant Ibis, Sarus Cranes, Mountain Hawk Eagles, Yellow-cheeked Crested Gibbons, Black-shanked Douc Langurs and Sun Bears.

On most days you'll explore the wildlife sanctuaries by foot, accompanied by a local wildlife guide who'll know the trails like the back of their hand and will be there to lead you in the right direction. So don't forget your hiking boots or your camera!

The best time of year for wildlife encounters is from December to April. November and May is classed as the shoulder seasons for wildlife viewing and are still good times to travel.
