Beyond the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor lies a beautiful and little-explored country with stunning countryside and a rich and varied cultural heritage. On this itinerary you'll head out in search of the real Cambodia, from the Cardamom Mountains to the coast and everything in between. Read more >

It is impossible to get beneath the surface of Cambodia without understanding the country's rich, complex and, at times, devastating history.

Starting in Siem Reap, you will be introduced to its most glorious civilisation: the Khmer Empire. For over 600 years they dominated vast swathes of Southeast Asia and, at its height, Cambodia was home to the largest known pre-industrial centres in the world. Discover this illustrious history with visits to the celebrated Angkor Wat complex, extraordinary Bayon faces and root-strangled Ta Prohm temple. You'll also take a trip to the lesser-known, but no less fascinating, jungle-clad Beng Mealea.

Moving on from this ancient kingdom to colonial Cambodia, you will admire some of the best-preserved architecture while cycling around the city of Battambang. Once you've explored its laidback streets, head to the countryside for a bit of fresh air in the surrounding rural villages and rice paddies.

Your next stop is the capital city of Phnom Penh, once considered the most beautiful colonial city in Asia. Sadly, it became the focal point of a bloody revolution during the 1970s - the Khmer Rouge decimated the population of Cambodia in just four years. A visit to the Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Prison here is optional; although it can be a harrowing experience, an understanding of the Cambodian genocide will enhance your appreciation of modern Cambodia.

Though history provides the background to your trip, the remainder of your journey will focus on Cambodia's plentiful natural attractions. Journey deep into the Cardamom Mountains to stay at a floating river lodge in Koh Kong, and round off your trip on the blissfully idyllic white sand beaches of Koh Rong Samloem; relax, take in a sundowner or two and snorkel on the beautiful corals that surround the island.

Cambodia has so much more to offer than Angkor Wat, and after spending two weeks exploring the incredible highlights, we're sure that you'll agree.
