Your trip begins in Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon, where you'll have an afternoon introduction to the area's colonial and modern history with an experienced local guide. An overview of Vietnam's turbulent past is essential to any understanding its present, and this afternoon should give you a fascinating introduction to the country before you head out into its fields and forests.

After your whistle-stop tour of Saigon, you'll leave the big city behind and begin your conservation itinerary in earnest. Your first stop along the way is the Nam Cat Tien National Park, where you'll stay at a local eco lodge, take a night safari through the jungle, trek to Crocodile Lake on the lookout for samba deer and wild boar, and visit a bear and wild cat conservation centre.

Moving on to Cambodia, you'll make a stop in Phnom Penh - the Pearl of the Orient - before heading to the Elephant Valley Project in Mondulkiri, then on to a night on Koh Trong Island, where you'll take a boat trip to see the local river dolphins.

In Laos you will explore the beautiful 4,000 Islands region, where the Mekong broadens to accommodation thousands of small islands and waterways, and visit the ancient ruins of Wat Phou Temple before some more time with the elephants at the Sayaboury Elephant Conservation Centre. Find out how these magnificent animals are looked after, help bathe and exercise them, and even have a go at riding them before heading back to Luang Prabang.

Luang Prabang is one of the cleanest, most laid-back and beautiful cities in Southeast Asia, so this is bound to provide one of the high points of your journey.
